Triglycerides

Triglycerides are a form of dietary fat found in the bloodstream and stored in fat tissue. Ideal levels measured in blood are less than 150 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL).

Heart health and metabolic health are tightly connected and high levels of triglycerides are related to cardiovascular disease. Alcohol consumption, smoking, low physical activity levels, high sugar intake, obesity, and untreated diabetes can elevate triglyceride levels.

Medical News Today provides us with more information about levels measured in blood and the consequences of not maintaining healthy levels of triglycerides and what effects our levels.

Falls

Once again we are providing information about falls and the serious results of them for us as we age. The Mayo Clinic lists common sense, simple measures we can take to protect ourselves, from reviewing our medications with our health care providers to taking safety measures in our homes to staying active and exercising on a regular basis.

The Benefits and Challenges of Aging In Place

This article from ISPOR is directed to providers but has a lot of valuable information both care receivers and caregivers can use. It is in-depth so it might be best to save it for future consultation if it is not needed right now. They don’t just discuss the issues there may be in the home but also the lack of coordination between health care providers and the problems this causes.

Caregivers

As we discussed last week, going forward we will have two articles each week for caregivers and how they can, again, provide this valuable service for family members and friends, and maintain their own health, jobs, financial well-being, etc. We have covered some of the information in these two articles but there is a lot here so there will be some new information also. These articles address respite care and support for caregivers, including exercise such as yoga.

And One More Thing

The Benefits of Reading and Libraries for Older Adults

There are so many benefits of reading for us as we age. Caring.com does a great job of listing them and makes excellent suggestions also. In the article, they list fees to join a library where they are located in California. I don’t know of any libraries here in the Chicago area that charge a fee to join.
