Metabolic Syndome. This is a topic we will try to visit more often as it is an integral part of our overall health and wellness. Harvard Health states here that incidents of metabolic syndrome are growing and helps us by defining what it is and why it matters.

Northwestern Medicine Healthbeat Newsletter talks to us here about how to read food labels and how deceptive they can be. This was an eye opener for me. I thought I had a pretty good idea of what I was looking at on labels. I am glad I came across this information.

Movement

Our friend Meredith of Senior Fitness with Meredith has a 30 minute, low impact workout here that she refers to as “cardio fun”. Enjoy this latest entry from Meredith and stay on the path to fitness.

Physical Therapist, Dr. Jared Beckstrand has an 8 minute stretching video for those of us that are not as flexible as we used to be. This is a major issue for me and many in our age bracket and I will feature more videos on this subject going forward.

Wellness

The Hearing Health Center of Chicago has some excellent information for us on how to prevent hearing loss. This information is for us as senior citizens, but you may have have family members of any age who are having some issues with hearing that can benefit from this and other information on their site. They have five locations in the Chicago metro area and if you are in another part of the country, ask them to refer you to a local provider.

Aging In Place

This information is provided by Lifeway Mobility. You may recognize that name as they sell mobility products for senior citizens and others. This is information is from a seminar they offer for professional remodelers, etc., but is valuable also if you are a do-it-yourselfer or know someone who can help you with this type of work. At the very least, it can give you some ideas about what you might want to change in your home as you age in place.

This is a link to the EatingWell website. We have posted articles from the site before. It is filled with great information so I thought I would just share the site itself. I highly recommend referring to it often. Excellent nutrition advice.

Movement

Another great site, HASfit, this one a fitness site with videos for different age groups. A lot for seniors that you can do with those you care for and also, many for younger people wanting to get and stay fit. Another site to archive.

Wellness

Harvard Health has 10 tips for taking senior parents, or anyone we are caring for, to doctor appointments. It includes how to prepare before the visit, what to do while there, and what to do after. These can be stressful situations so this information is especially helpful.

From HelpGuide.org, a wealth of information on respite care for caregivers. We will continue to work on sourcing caregiver sites and options. The need is so great for those performing this valuable service. If you know someone who is a caregiver, please pass this on to them.

How Much Sugar IsToo Much from the American Hospital Association. This breaks down the biggest sources of sugar in our diet and what to look out for as we shop. This is a big issue for many of us, myself included.

Movement

From the Foot Collective, a 5 minute video on how to strengthen our arches and keep our feet and our base healthy.

It is Pickleball season again. The Medical University of South Carolina gives good advice here and also shares in the history of pickleball, which begin near Seattle in 1965. I had no idea it has been around that long. Enjoy the exercise that comes along with pickleball along with the social aspects. We will publish the obligatory article next week about injury prevention while playing.

Wellness

This is a free download from Johns Hopkins Medicine titled “Healthy at 50 Plus”. It offers 10 steps to health at the age of 50 and up. This is good for all caregivers and receivers alike.

And One More Thing

This is some heavy but informative reading from the Alliance For Health Policy. They site health aging as a key policy issue in 2025, something that effects all of us. There is a summary of the report and the whole report can be downloaded if you want.
