Care Receivers
Nutrition
Eating Well has a variety of recipes here for senior citizens that they refer to as “Healthy Aging Recipes”. I have tried some of their recipes and they are very good.

Nutrition
Dani of Clean and Delicious has a video for us with five healthy, high protein breakfast ideas are easy and delicious!
Movement
Meredith of Senior Fitness with Meredith has a video for beginners and those with an intermediate level that features strenght and cardio exercises to help with osteoporosis. While medication, nutrtion, lifestyle changes, etc. can be factors also, these exercises will help with day to day functioning, including staying safe from falls and other issues.

Movement
Dr. Jo has a 37 minute full body stretching workout here. Do what you can. No need to do the whole video all at once. This video is from a number of years ago but, like many of Dr. Jo’s videos, is still popular, with over 4 million views. There is nothing like a good morning stretch session.

Wellness
Although it doesn’t feel like it some days (like today), Spring is here and summer will follow soon. The American Academy of Dermatology Association has information here to on how to practice, as they put it, safe sun. There are also links to some articles at the bottom of the page with more information on how to care for our skin. She gets it.

Caregivers
Nutrition
The Fallon Health Caregiver Connection newsletter has a lot of good nutrition advice for caregivers. This is such an important, but often neglected, part of the whole process of being a caregiver.

Movement
Dr. Jon Saunders, PT, has a 7 minute video for us that addresses neck and shoulder pain and stiffness in those areas. In your caregiving duties you may strain these areas while moving or lifting your care receivers and this video will help you deal with any discomfort you develop.

Wellness
CaringInfo has very good support resources listed here for caregivers. If you are a caregiver or have a family member or friend who is, please share this. Along with the information in the article, there are links in the left hand column with more. I know I say this often, but it may be a good idea to archive information like this. We never know when it might be needed. Some of these sites also have newsltetter you may want to subscribe to or blogs with valuable articles.

Wellness
This is valuable information from Mental Health America for caregivers. This is the area that caregivers need the most help with. Included in the article is a link with a guide for caregiver resources. In everything I read about caregiving, almost all sources say that if you are a caregiver, to reach out for help and try not to wait too long. If you have a family member or friend who is caregiving, check on them often and see what they need. Maybe try yogo or meditation like the person in the picture below.

Wellness
The University of Pennsylvania has an interview here with two sleep researchers from the Leonard Davis Institute of Ecomomic Health. The title highlights those working with home hospice patients, but the information applies to all caregiving roles. Sleep is another important wellness component for caregivers. In addition, there is good information here for all of us, whether we are caregivers, currently or not.

Both Care Receivers and Caregivers
Nutrition
Registered Dietician Laura O’Hara of Archwell Health has a staying nourished guide for both caregivers and their care receivers. This addresses both needs and, again, there are links at the bottom of the article to more good information regarding nutrition.

Nutrition
Homewatch Caregivers has 10 healthy meals that are easy to make that caregivers can prepare for themselves and their care receivers. This is so important for both parties involved.

Movement
Homecare-Aid has exercises here that caregivers and care receivers can do together. This is highly recommended by gerontologists and other professionals who work with senior citizens and their caregivers. Once again, there is a list of more information in the right hand column you might find of value.

Movement
The Foot Collective has a video here titled “How To Rewild Your Toes”. It highlights being able to splay your toes as a beginning to having a healthy base in which to move in our daily lives. I have been wearing shoes with a wide toe box for a couple years and my toes, including a hammer toe, have splayed and healed on their own. At one point I was told I needed surgery to address the hammer toe.
Movement
Dr. Jon Saunders again today with an excellent video on ankle mobility, another of the key components of our base. I have come to realize lately that my ankles are very tight and how much it effects my movement and carries over to other parts of my body. This is excellent information. If you learn that you have an issue like this, you might want to consult a Physical Therapist to get some help.
Wellness
This article could have come under Movement as well, but it is titled “Walking to Wellness” so I thought I would place it here. It highlights the benefits of care receivers and their caregivers wallking together. It is a 10 page pdf with a lot of good information.

Aging In Place
Caring Senior Services has advice for seniors about the benefits of having a pet, choosing the right pet, how to care for it and more.

Programs for seniors in the State of Illinois. If you live outside Illinois, please google similar organizations in your own state for more information.
And One More Thing
Cigna outlines the differences between Medicare Advantage and traditional Medicare with a supplement. If you are 65 or over and already on one or the other, you may have been thinking about switching. This will give you some ideas of what to ask your broker if you have one and the pros and cons of both. If you are 64 or younger and starting to think about what is coming down the road for you, this can help you decide which is the best option for you. This topic has been in the news often lately so I thought I would address it here. SHSH has no affiliation with Cigna, just thought it was good information that was presented well.
