Movement Wellness Aging In Place Caregivers And One More Thing

We recommend that Caregivers review the section for Care Receivers, to aid them in assisting their Receiver, and, also, for themselves, as much of the information can help them stay healthy and avoid health issues as they age themselves.

Movement

Senior Fitness with Meredith brings us an excellent indoor, walking workout this week. There have been many hot and humid days lately and it is still June. With more of the same to come, this indoor workout is an excellent way to get in a cardio workout, raise your heart rate and avoid any problems that can arise with exposure to the elements. Also, our air quality has been good so far this summer, but keep an eye on it also on days you are heading outside.

Active People, Healthy Nation. This is an initiative by the CDC to increase physical activity by 27 million more Americans by 2027. This is not entirely for senior citizens, but there is interesting information about levels of fitness in our country and also, some links to good information we can use under “Resources” below the article.

Wellness

Visceral Fat

Another one of the metabolic markers, otherwise known as belly fat. Visceral fat can be a factor in health issues such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and some cancers. The Cleveland Clinic provides us with information describing symptoms and causes, helping us measure our level of visceral fat and how to lose it with lifestyle changes. As the article explains, this is fat that is deep within our abdominal cavity and, again, can cause us serious health issues. The picture shows someone on their way to a healthy measurement.

Exercise and activity after a heart attack. Whether this directly effects any of us, or maybe a family member or a friend, The Cleveland Clinic outlines what can and should be done while recovering. As they state, the patients’ doctor will advise when it is appropriate to begin a recovery program, with patients being given a prescription for cardiac rehabilitation. This is very important, as everyone has had a different level of damage to their heart, so everyone will recover at a different pace.

Aging In Place

Occupational Therapy assisting with aging in place. This article from Always Best Care Senior Services suggests having an Occupational Therapist visit your home. do an assessment of each senior citizens’ physical capabilities and then make suggestions regarding adapting the home to meet their needs. This is an excellent way to get a medical professional involved in these important, and in some cases, life saving recommendations.

Aging In Place

Bathroom safety accessories. Here are ten suggestions to help keep us safe in the bathroom. Many already have some of these but if there are a couple new to anyone, perhaps it can increase their level of safety. It would be a good idea to review bathroom safety with an Occupational Therapist, as suggested in the previous article.

Caregivers

Dehydration in aging adults. This is a chronic problem as we age and something to be aware of as we care for our loved ones and friends. Dr. Leslie Kernisan, in a lengthy Q and A, provides the reasons senior citizens dehydrate, the issues it causes for them and methods caregivers can employ to identify if there is a dehydration problem and how to address it with those they are caring for. As we have discussed with other issues that arise as our loved ones age, a more educated and nuanced approach can make the experience better for all involved.

Caregiver statistics. From the Family Caregiver Alliance, here are links with information about caregiving, with emphasis on the the effect it can have on you while performing this valuable service. It highlights some of the serious issues that come along with caregiving. Going forward, we will focus on solutions that give caregivers more support and some respite from their duties.

And One More Thing

Best Walking Shoes for Seniors. Whether wearing them outside on nice days, or doing your indoor workout with Meredith, here are some great suggestions for you. As I mentioned in my post describing the article by Runners World last week, a good pair of walking or running shoes is an investment in our health, not an expense.
