Movement Wellness Aging In Place Caregivers And One More Thing
Mission Statement
To provide information, products and services regarding home based living in a way that preserves the wellbeing of both the care recipients and their care givers.
If you have difficulty reading the newsletter in the color scheme below, please click on “Read Online” in the upper right hand corner for black print on a white background.
We recommend that Caregivers review the section for Care Receivers, to aid them in assisting their Receiver, and, also, for themselves, as much of the information can help them stay healthy and avoid health issues as they age themselves.
Care Receivers
Movement.
From Senior Fitness with Meredith, here is a 10 minute video on posture and balance, two very important components of our exercise routine. As we know, falls are a serious problem for seniors and this video will be a good start. We will feature other videos from Meredith on posture and balance in the future. You don’t have to take this as far as the lady in the picture. Just follow Meredith and you will be fine.

Movement.
We may not quite be officially into summer here in Chicago, but it is getting warmer and we will have more opportunities to get out and walk. Here is an article we published earlier by Joanna (Jo) Diamond, my physical therapist at React Physical Therapy. Jo highlights the benefits of walking and how it can keep us healthy.
Wellness/Aging In Place
Geriatric Home Care Program. Northwestern Medicine offers this comprehensive program that treats many issues in the home instead of the hospital. May healthcare providers are going in this direction. NM’s will give you an idea of what one of these programs is like. Consult with your doctors about options that they offer.

Wellness
The American Academy of Dermatology lists 12 summer skin problems we can incur and how we can help prevent them. We have discussed different forms of skin cancers before and they are covered here, but also included are issues like sunburn, rashes, poison ivy, etc.

Aging In Place/Caregivers
From Healthline, Aging In Place, What It Is and What You Can Do. Another article that both the care receivers and caregivers can benefit from. This is a very thorough look at what takes to develop a plan to age in place, which, in many cases, includes family caregivers.

Aging In Place
More information about AIP and what it is and takes to develop a successful plan from the National Institute on Aging.

Caregivers
Dr. Leslie Kernisan provides us again with invaluable information about how to check older parents and how to prepare them for difficult changes in their lives. This is a 10 page pdf with information I doubt is organized in this manner anywhere else. Many thanks to Dr. Kernisan for her excellent work she provides us.

Sleep.
This is a major issue for Caregivers. The Cleveland Clinic highlights 13 effects of sleep deprivation. I would urge all caregivers to look into this and develop methods of healthy sleep habits. This will have positive effects for you and your loved one you are caring for.

And One More Thing.
Alzheimer’s study. The Hill publishes results from a study conducted by the journal Alzheimer’s Research and Therapy. The study tested 51 patients who were previously diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. The study found that diet and exercise may slow the decline in patients. Read the article to see some impressive results. More often now, we are seeing these type of results by adjusting diet and exercise levels, no matter the condition of the patient.
