Movement
This week the focus moves from cardio training to strength training. Strength training helps us maintain muscle mass, bone density, helps with balance and our overall fitness level. Start slowly, especially if you haven’t exercised in a while. Also, using proper form is essential in preventing injuries. The accompanying article by Very Well Fit is an example of a full body workout for senior citizens. There are also numerous other workouts on YouTube and working with a personal trainer for a few sessions is another option. Whatever you choose to do, if you have questions or doubts about what you should do, always consult your health care professional for advice when you begin or add to a cardio or strength program.

Wellness
We are going to address another of the five markers of metabolic health today, Triglycerides. Triglycerides are a type of fat found in our blood that is used for energy, which is good. However, if our triglyceride levels become too high they can increase our risk of heart disease and stroke. The Mayo Clinic helps us with information about how our diet, physical inactivity, smoking, genetics and certain medical conditions can effect triglyceride levels and what we can do to lower them, such as a more healthy diet, regular exercise, weight management, limiting alcohol consumption and quitting smoking. In some cases medication is also needed so, again, please work with your health care provider to determine your individual needs.

Aging In Place

Caregivers
Respite care provides temporary relief for primary caregivers who are caring for family members, friends or other lover ones. It gives caregivers an opportunity to take a break from their caregiving responsibilities while knowing their loved ones are receiving the care they need in their brief absence. This article form Aging Care describes the different types of respite care, how it works and the benefits of it for them and their care recipients to ensure that both receive the care and support they need to thrive.

And One More Thing
Wearing the proper footwear is important for us as we age for a variety of reasons, including maintaining stability, preventing falls and supporting overall foot health. There are many considerations when selecting footwear such as comfort, support, ease of putting on, heel height, room for orthotics along with any specific needs we might have. The Foot and Ankle Specialists of Algonquin, Illinois cover all of this and more in this comprehensive article.
