Movement Wellness Aging In Place Caregivers And One More Thing

Movement

We will be reviewing all of the sub-categories under Movement each week starting with Cardio. Maintaining a level of cardiovascular health is important for us as we age no matter where we are starting out from. Having a level of cardiovascular capacity will allow us to remain independent longer and enjoy family and friends more as well. This article from NASM offers many options for us. It goes into strength training as well but we will cover strength training in more detail next week.

Wellness

We are revisiting the five markers of Metabolic Health and will begin today with blood sugar levels, a subject we have visited more than once. With the consistent year to year increase in Type 2 Diabetes, this can’t be emphasized enough. We will offer more information on a regular bases regarding blood sugar levels, including healthy diet and food choices. The Mayo Clinic provides valuable basic information that gives us a good understanding of where our blood sugar levels should be.

Aging In Place

Some great information from Jukebox Health of New York City. They offer a variety of services but primarily focus on adapting homes for Aging In Place, from minor additions to major ones. Over the next two months we will be expanding the amount of Aging In Place information provided in the newsletter including local options for these services.

Caregivers

Tai Chi is not just an excellent form of exercise for care receivers but also a great form of exercise and a stress reliever for caregivers as well. The National Council on Health teaches us the fundamentals of Tai Chi and how to get started. There are numerous options in the Chicago area at local community centers, YMCA’s and fitness clubs. As we have discussed earlier, caregivers taking care of themselves is as important as the care they are offering.

And One More Thing

Seasons.com lists transportation options for seniors in the Chicago area. Many of us would rather opt for an alternative method of transportation even if we are still driving. Of course, if you are not, this will be especially helpful.
