Blood Pressure

Regular contributor to Stay Health Stay Home, gerontologist, Dr. Leslie Kernisan, provides information describing what new blood pressure guidelines mean for older adults. She explains how the Sprint Study, 2013, effected blood pressure measurements and also has a link in this article that offers information on how blood pressure levels can effect falls in senior citizens.

Dental Health For Older Adults

A subject we haven’t addressed yet but one of great importance to many of us. Consumer Reports Health Newsletter discusses common dental issues that many seniors deal with and how to treat them. Many of us don’t have dental coverage so let our dental needs go. This article also has ideas about how to address this issue.

The Value of Aging in Place

This article by the Leonard Davis School of Gerontology at the University of Southern California lists reasons so many of us want to age in place, in our own homes. AARP puts the number of seniors who want to stay in their home at nearly 90%. The actual number who can is considerably lower, primarily due to having one or more chronic diseases. This is at the core of the purpose of this newsletter, SHSH. We will continue to try to bring valuable information each week so, again, we can live our lives on our terms.

Tai Chi to Boost Memory

There are many examples of how exercise can help with memory as we age. A popular method is Tai Chi. This article from NPR references the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, a well known test to measure cognitive decline. A study including 300 participants in their mid-seventies showed an increase in cognitive ability after six months of Tai Chi, 2-3 times per week.
